ASHOKA - - Arab World

International Contribution to Arab Society - 2016

Founded in 1980 by veteran social Bill Drayton, Ashoka seeks to foster an ecosystem where social entrepreneurship can thrive in the region. The organization believes that anyone can learn and apply the critical skills of empathy, team work, and leadership to actively build their communities. This movement is built through collaboration with education, the private sector, media, academia and government.

Dr. Iman Bibars has led Ashoka’s Arab World office since its founding in 2003. She is also, the Vice President and Global Diaspora Leader of Ashoka Global. Dr. Bibars is well-known as a pioneer of women’s empowerment initiatives and a staunch advocate for their rights. She cofounded and is the current Chairperson of the Association for the Development and Enhancement of Women (ADEW), which provides credit and legal aid to impoverished women. Headquartered in Cairo, Ashoka Arab World has elected and currently supports 91 Fellows in 11 countries in the region.

Ashoka’s fellows can be found working in a range of sectors, including health, education, income generation/job creation, gender engagement and youth empowerment among others. The Ashoka Fellowship offers them a living stipend and connection to an elite global network of social entrepreneurs and strategic partnerships.
